With only 15 calories per tablespoon, less than 3 grams of carbs, no artificial sweeteners and no artificial colors, this Low Sugar Chocolate Sauce is the perfect healthy dessert topping your whole family can enjoy!
My family is on a quest to dial down the sugar around our house.
Notice I said dial down, not eliminate.
I’m kinda over the whole “sugar-free” hysteria. It’s really not necessary.
Yes, we all probably eat too much sugar.
No, we don’t have to avoid it completely.
The problem with my position is that there are VERY few products that cater to “less sugar,” and especially less sugar by way of no artificial sweeteners.
[Not that I think artificial sweeteners have to be avoided completely either, but I do prefer both the taste and the natural sweetening ability of erythritol. If you’re not familiar with erythritol, it’s a naturally occurring sugar alcohol, that, unlike other sugar alcohols, doesn’t cause tummy upset. It’s what Swerve is made from… so if you’re looking for a brand name to buy, Swerve is what I use in my fave desserts and definitely what I recommend.]
One of the ways we’ve cut down on sugar is by cutting out sugary treats after dinner during the week. My kids adore fresh fruit, but even I acknowledge that a bowl of strawberries as “dessert” night after night is a bit of a stretch for a kid. Our compromise is being able to dip them in a little bit of chocolate sauce.
The problem is the ingredient list in the less sugar chocolate sauce from Hershey’s that I’d been buying has artificial coloring.
Artificial coloring. In a brown chocolate sauce.
Seriously. That is like the most unnecessary thing ever.
While I also don’t ban artificial colors completely from foods we buy, I do prefer foods without them. (Read “Are Artificial Food Dyes Safe For Kids” by my friend Sally to understand why I try to avoid them when possible.) So rather than give up on our fruit/chocolate combo or settle for an artificially sweetened/colored chocolate sauce, I decided to create my own with input from my youngest taste tester.
We went through three different batches before arriving at this one:
I really wanted it to be a “dark chocolate” sauce.
He really wanted it to be a “milk chocolate” sauce.
Clearly, you can see who makes the food decisions around my house.
If you’re looking for a sweet treat that’s short on calories, carbs, and sugar, but is a nice way to drizzle up extra yum appeal, this sauce is it.Print
